Invoicing is the easiest (and often most rewarding) part of the job.

When I began self-syndicating my newspaper column, I took the lead from King Features. They paid me (and editors paid them) by how many Mondays were in the month. That means if there were four Monday's in the month, they charged the newspaper four times the weekly rate. If there were five Monday's, King charged them five times the weekly rate.

Quicken for Home and Business is an excellent tool for this. You enter the client, as well as each newspaper’s negotiated price just once. Then each month, you simply state if that price is multiplied times four or times five. You can either mail, fax or E-MAIL editors the invoice.

Do newspaper editors pay promptly?

Newspapers usually pay in 30 days. All I have worked with have stuck to that schedule.

If I use a pen name, how do I cash the check?

The editors should know your true name. Unless you are in the witness protection program or something but that is probably a pretty rare instance. The readers need not know.
